Teeth extractions can be necessary for a variety of reasons including infections, decay, accidents, orthodontic preparation, medical issues, wisdom teeth and more. At Christiana Dental Center in Newark, DE, our dental professionals have expertise in all kinds of extractions and we will do everything possible to make them as low-stress and pain-free as possible.
Types of Extractions
There are two types of extractions:
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen. In a simple extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth with an instrument called an elevator; then a forceps is used to remove the tooth.
A surgical extraction is more complex. This process may be used if the tooth is broken off or has not or cannot come into the mouth. For a surgical extraction, the doctor makes a small cut into your gum to reach the tooth.
During a tooth extraction, you can expect to feel pressure, but no pain.
Our office at Christiana Dental Center will give you detailed instructions on what to do and what to expect after your surgery. You can expect some mild discomfort after even simple extractions. We recommend over-the-counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen. Ice packs are also helpful, especially for swelling.
After an extraction, you'll be asked to bite on a piece of gauze, allowing the blood to clot. Make sure not to disturb the clot that forms on the wound.
