CLEANINGS AND PREVENTION

DENTAL EXAM

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by the dentist during your dental visits. The dentist and hygienist will include the following:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): This is essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, or bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions, which are need to diagnose the needed for a tooth extraction procedure.
  • Oral cancer screening: For this, your dentist will check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Your dentist will check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination for tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Your dentist will observe your current fillings, crowns, etc.

PROFESSIONAL DENTAL CLEANING

Professional dental cleanings are performed by registered dental hygienists. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus isn’t just math, it is also hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with specialized dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is sticky and almost invisible. It is a type of film that forms on the teeth and allows bacteria to grow with no restrictions. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease which can cause multiple dental problems.
  • Teeth polishing: During this process, your doctor will perform stain removal procedures.

DIGITAL X-RAYS

Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses a sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged, helping the dentist and hygienist to detect problems more easily. Digital x-rays reduce radiation exposure 80-90 percent compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays.

Dental x-rays are essential preventative and diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam. Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan. Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

DENTAL X-RAYS MAY REVEAL:

  • Abscesses or cysts.
  • Bone loss.
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
  • Decay between the teeth.
  • Developmental abnormalities.
  • Poor tooth root positions.
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line.

Detecting and treating dental problems at an early stage may save you time, money, unnecessary discomfort. Most importantly, this method may be able to diagnose certain dental issues before they become problematic and make you lose your teeth.

As a dental office, our goal is to ensure that your teeth are strong and healthy. By using technology, such as digital x-rays, our staff is far more equipped to identify serious problems before they can get worse.

VELSCOPE ORAL CANCER SCREENING

We utilize the only FDA-approved device for early detection of oral cancer as part of our routine examination for all of our patients. Every hour of every day, one person in North America dies from oral cancer. With early detection, the survival rate is increased dramatically from 50 to 80 percent. Unfortunately, only 35 percent of oral cancer cases are caught early.

SOPROLIFE™ DENTISTRY

SOPROLIFE enhances Dr. Recktenwald’s vision during your dental examination. With SOPROLIFE, Dr. Recktenwald is able to more accurately identify and determine the location of dental problems and evaluate areas of decay with an image magnification of 30 to 100 times. Visual alerts are shown by variations of autofluorescence linked to a magnified vision of the amelodentinal architecture.

“SEE THE INVISIBLE”

SOPROLIFE provides better detection of decays than other available devices. It also detects proximal lesions, unlike other devices, thanks to its ergonomic design.

“TIME-SAVING DIAGNOSIS”

With the use of the Soprolife technology, the speed of diagnosis and planning of your treatment is greatly increased, saving you time in our office.

“LESS X-RAY EXPOSURE FOR OUR PATIENTS”

With the fluorescence imagery of SOPROLIFE, Christiana Dental Center, our patients are exposed to even less digital radiology in the detection of the decay of hard tissues.
